About this talk

Neuroscientist and musician Alan Harvey takes us on an interactive journey to explain how music is much more than just entertainment.

Music has the extraordinary ability to stimulate our emotions and evoke memories. It can also affect us at a biological level.

Alan is joined by fellow neuroscientist Andrew Price and musicians from Perth Symphony Orchestra, led by Bourby Webster. Together, they demonstrate live the impact music has on our brain waves.

You’ve never seen music like this before!

About the speaker

London-born Alan Harvey gained his PhD in neurophysiology from the Australian National University in Canberra. He spent some time researching and teaching in the USA and South Australia before coming to Western Australia in 1984.

Alan is now an Emeritus Professor at the University of Western Australia. His research is primarily focused on understanding the growth of circuits in the visual system and spinal cord, and how best to protect and repair these circuits after injury.

He is also passionate about music. His book Music, Evolution, and the Harmony of Souls was published by Oxford University Press in 2017. Bringing together his musical and neuroscientific interests, it explores the importance of music throughout human evolution.
