For thousands of years, the Whadjuk Nyoongar people have lived on the lands of Boorloo (Perth) and used yarning to pass history, culture and perspectives of the future between generations.

TEDxPerth acknowledges the Whadjuk Nyoongar people as the Custodians of these lands and waterways, and extends our respect to Elders past, present and emerging.

Why we need unexpected allies to fix climate change

About this talk

Jeff Hansen believes that no task is too hard, and no foe too big, when a group of passionate and dedicated people come together to work towards a common goal.

Jeff recounts chasing down illegal fishing vessels, and how an unlikely industry alliance has seen incredible outcomes in tackling threats to the oceans and humanity.

To tackle the climate emergency, and be better caretakers of our planet, we need to join forces and leave our preconceptions of each other at the door.

About the speaker

Jeff Hansen sits on the Board of Sea Shepherd Global, Sea Shepherd Australia and Sea Shepherd New Zealand. Under Jeff’s leadership, Sea Shepherd has co-operated with many organisations and governments in unlikely alliances to reach common goals.

A qualified electronic and computer engineer and proud father of two, Jeff believes that nature is the most spectacular show on earth, and that no government decision should ever be made that has a negative impact on future generations.

He has led and co-led many conservation campaigns to victory. This includes ending shark culling in WA, stopping the world’s largest gas hub from going through the world’s biggest humpback whale nursery off the Kimberley coast, and stopping oil giants from drilling in the fragile, biodiverse waters of the Great Australian Bight.
