For thousands of years, the Whadjuk Nyoongar people have lived on the lands of Boorloo (Perth) and used yarning to pass history, culture and perspectives of the future between generations.

TEDxPerth acknowledges the Whadjuk Nyoongar people as the Custodians of these lands and waterways, and extends our respect to Elders past, present and emerging.

About this talk

Quick-witted, creative and recklessly optimistic, Michael Gatt and Owen Merriman are loveable larrikins who started an informal men’s self-development group.

One night they all tried a self-confidence booster: improvised public speaking.

The results were so powerful they decided to take it public. And so, the controversially named TOD Talks was born: a hilarious, interactive, live stage show.

Michael and Owen thrive on spontaneity, believing planning is overrated. Enjoy their charming cheekiness as they share the joys and benefits of living in the moment.

About the speaker

Michael and Owen have been friends since their early twenties. Although focusing on different careers, they discovered a shared passion for creativity and bringing ideas to life. Over the years, they have collaborated on a string of creative side-hustles, including stand-up comedy, charity events, a Fringe show, and an app they thought would rival YouTube.

Michael has spent his adult life in the pursuit of creativity, from graphic design to art facilitation, artistic direction, and even a short-lived stint on radio. Michael’s happy place is when he can take an idea from the depths of his imagination and bring it to life.

Owen suffers from a terminal affliction—reckless optimism. Saying yes to more things than practically possible has led him to a vast array of extracurricular activities: from elite-level obscure sports, to politics, to air guitar championships, to hosting Q&As with astronauts.
