About this talk

What happens when we bring honesty, curiosity and empathy to our conversations? Can it lead to better and more meaningful relationships?

Kirk Docker asks the questions that most people are too afraid to ask, interviewing members of marginalised and misunderstood groups on ABC TV’s You Can’t Ask That.

Kirk learned to ask questions that would move conversations beyond the superficial. The responses offer insights that confront prejudice and break down stereotypes.

Here, he shares five techniques that can lead to deeper, more authentic interactions.

About the speaker

Leaving university with a degree in Communication and Media Studies, Kirk Docker has enjoyed a successful career as a director and interviewer. His early work included shows such as Hungry Beast and Demolition Man.

He is perhaps best known as the interviewer, co-creator and director of the award-winning Australian television series You Can’t Ask That.

This humbling experience has taught him that we all share a basic need to be understood for who we are.

Kirk is a firm believer that curiosity, compassion and empathy can free us from our social media bubbles and lead us to more fulfilling interactions.

He currently lives in Sydney, where he shares his knowledge of interview techniques through interactive workshops.
