For thousands of years, the Whadjuk Nyoongar people have lived on the lands of Boorloo (Perth) and used yarning to pass history, culture and perspectives of the future between generations.

TEDxPerth acknowledges the Whadjuk Nyoongar people as the Custodians of these lands and waterways, and extends our respect to Elders past, present and emerging.

How diversity heaven can be inclusion hell

About this talk

Diversity and inclusion strategist Fadzi Whande contends that diversity is the means, not the destination. She observes that it’s possible to have diversity without inclusion, where some voices are still unheard or excluded.

Society tends to place the responsibility for advocating for equity and creating inclusive spaces on marginalised people.

Yet, as Fadzi reminds us, inclusion is an individual and personal responsibility for everyone. She shares her dream that, one day, her job won’t need to exist.

About the speaker

Fadzi Whande is an award-winning global diversity and inclusion strategist and social justice advocate. Her background ranges from launching telecommunication networks to addressing social disadvantage across government, business, not-for-profits and educational institutions in Africa, Australia, the UK and the USA.

Fadzi is a skilled facilitator in the areas of gender inclusive leadership, racial equity, unconscious bias and human rights. Her work primarily focuses on addressing systemic and institutionalised barriers held towards historically underrepresented groups.

She has been named an Australia Day Ambassador and 2018 Western Australian of the Year finalist, and was a recipient of the 2016 International Racial Equity Leadership Award in the USA and a 2016 finalist for the Australian Human Rights ‘Racism it stops with me’ Award.
