Start somewhere. Anywhere. | Kate McIvor | TEDxPerth

From little things, big things grow. Kate McIvor explores how building a men's centre in Greece taught her that everybody can help somebody. Her team didn't know what they could do to help – they simply decided to start. Hear how these lessons in empathy and action changed lives for all involved, and how you too can contribute to empowerment over charity.

Refugee Activist

While Perth will always be home, Kate has been fortunate enough to travel and meet people from all over the world, having worked in the travel industry for the past 14 years.

She is the co-owner and Director of Travel Execs, a mobile travel agency that allows people to work from anywhere in the world. She is a business coach and trainer, a marriage celebrant, and a passionate believer in the power that education, understanding and action play in creating a better world.

As for so many of us, the ongoing refugee crisis was increasingly on her mind. In 2015, a three-year-old by the name of Aylan Kurdi was found on a beach in Turkey, having drowned trying to reach Europe, and a safer life, with his family. This was a tipping point and in 2016 an opportunity came up to travel to Greece with a friend and volunteer in a refugee camp on the island of Chios.
