How to be stubborn | Esther Onek | TEDxPerth

Through losing her fingers in a fire at the age of three and seven years in a refugee camp, you'd understand if Esther had lost hope. Arriving in Australia with no English, completing a university degree and learning to lead, Esther has remained hopeful and stayed stubborn.

Esther's story of transformation and growth shows what is possible when resolve finds courage. Esther is from the Acholi tribe in South Sudan and now lives in Australia. Esther was born in South Sudan, part of the Acholi tribe. Due South Sudan’s instability her family fled to a Kenyan refugee camp for seven years.

Arriving in Australia aged 10, and knowing no English, Esther ultimately obtained a Bachelor of Social Work. Esther now works with The Women’s Health and Family Services as a Multicultural Women’s Domestic Violence Advocate. Esther enjoys playing soccer and plays for the Jaguar’s Women’s Football Team.
