About this talk

The deep-sea floor contains considerable mineral resources, including rare earth minerals used for renewable energy technologies.

But what are the unique dangers of deep-sea mining – and who is responsible for protecting our ocean floor?

Chilean marine geologist, Sandor Mulsow, declares the world’s oceans belong to everyone, and yet no one. He describes his passionate quest to protect the deep sea, to speak to it and for it.

Listen as Sandor explains why the deep sea is essential for life on our planet, the surprising extent of deep-sea mining happening right now, and how we can all make a difference for future generations.

About the speaker

Sandor Mulsow is a former leader of the Office of Environmental Management and Mineral Resources at the International Seabed Authority (ISA). The ISA is tasked with protecting our deep seas but, increasingly, they play a role in exploiting it.

Sandor has been a UN Scientist for over 20 years, primarily with the International Atomic Energy Agency. He is a Professor of Marine Geology at the Universidad Austral de Chile.

Sandor is featured in the documentary ‘Deep Rising’ narrated by Jason Momoa.
