About this talk
Originally from Mumbai, Pankaj Sharma tells how moving to Perth burst his bubble of immunity to poverty.
He discovered a fresh perspective on prosperity and the concept of cause-related ‘giving back’. In a society obsessed with instant gratification, Pankaj wondered why we wait to do good.
This led to a food-based social impact enterprise, which has fed and educated thousands impoverished children in Mumbai.
It’s a business model that seeks to give when it’s needed, not when it’s convenient—a practice Pankaj urges us all to embrace.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organised by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
About the speaker
Perth was not a planned location for Pankaj and his wife to settle down when they moved from Mumbai in 2013. However, after their super-hectic lifestyle in Mumbai, the beautiful, laid-back lifestyle of Perth mesmerised them.
They now call Perth their Karmabhoomi, a Sanskrit word which loosely translates to ‘land of action’.
Pankaj has worked for some of the biggest multinational media and advertising companies in India, most recently with a film production company where he was part of more than 30 Bollywood movies.
In 2015 he and his wife Kim started Toast My Curry, a social impact enterprise using the model of Buy One, Give One. For each sale, they donated a meal to support the education of street kids in Mumbai.
