About this talk

Austral Fisheries was the first fishing company in the world to achieve carbon neutral status. This remarkable feat was achieved in just 402 days, under David Carter’s leadership as Austral’s CEO.

David explains why and how Austral became a powerful advocate for climate action.

He challenges other progressive businesses to see going carbon neutral as an opportunity to stand out, make a difference, and earn customer loyalty.

About the speaker

David Carter has been CEO of Austral Fisheries since 2003. He has a deep-seated belief in sustainability, fairness and equity, and ‘doing the right thing’ over short term expediency.

David once believed climate change was a taboo topic. He now knows it is all about risk and money—a language business understands perfectly.

Under David’s leadership, Austral achieved carbon neutral status in 2016. The company has also been an effective voice in reducing the prevalence of illegal fishing globally.

David has a strong commitment to science-based fisheries management, believing deeply in recognition of sustainable fisheries performance through third party certification schemes such as the Marine Stewardship Council.
