TEDxYouth@Perth is minimising the impact our event has on our environment. In fact, we are leading the way by ensuring that all TEDxPerth events in 2020 are certified carbon neutral.
Let's work together to make our State carbon neutral!
- Use public transport. The State Theatre Centre of WA is very close to Perth Train Station and is on a number of bus routes.
- Bring your own water bottle. We will have water on tap and other free healthy drinks options will be available in non-plastic containers.
- Next time you attend an event, any event, ask what measures the organisers are taking to minimise their carbon footprint.
- Consider joining Countdown, TED's global initiative to turn the tide on the climate crisis.
What we are doing
In 2020 TEDxPerth is working to ensure all our events are certified carbon neutral under the Government's Climate Active Carbon Neutral Standard. Read the Climate Active Carbon Neutral Standard for Events.
We are working with our friends at Cundall who are helping us to achieve this high standard. Put simply, we will reduce our carbon footprint as far as possible and then offset what remains by buying Gold Standard Carbon Offsets in the Yarra Yarra Biodiversity Corridor in Western Australia.
The Yarra Yarra Biodiversity Corridor
The Yarra Yarra Biodiversity Corridor is located in Western Australia's northern agricultural region approximately 400km north of Perth. The Corridor features diverse ancient landscapes, from heavily weathered forming sandplains to heavier, more fertile red brown clay loams. The landscape once supported extensive woodlands of York gum and Salmon gum.
Within the last 100 years, over 90% of the northern Wheatbelt (known as the Mid West) has been cleared for agriculture. This has removed so much native habitat that many plant and animal species are extinct locally or regionally. Others, however, have hung on in woodland and shrubland remnants - usually on rocky ridges and commercially less productive upper valley slopes.
TEDxPerth is buying Carbon Offsets that help reconnect these valuable remnant vegetation sites and link 12 nature reserves across a vast tract of land covering approximately 10,000 square kilometres.
This is Australia's largest revegetation project based on carbon capture and biodiversity and TEDxPerth is proud to be offsetting our carbon emissions by investing in this project. Not only are we sequestering carbon, but also, we're investing in biodiverse habitats for animals and providing support for our fellow humans in remote communities.
